First Salon of the academic year brings Academy classes together to explore community.

On Sunday, October 29th, the Bucksbaum Early Entrance Academy held its first salon of the 2017-2018 academic year, only this time with a twist. The topic was community and the Academy’s first-year students were paired with their second-year counterparts. Add the Mayor of Iowa City Jim Throgmorton, a picturesque view of Sand Lake, and some local Mediterranean food and you have the makings for a very special night.

Both first and second year classes were charged with identifying two or three “communities” they belonged to prior to the event. Over dinner, the students then engaged in a discussion on how these communities were selected, and the unique aspects and benefits of each.
